Biosphere 2 in the early ’90s was the gleaming pinnacle of grade-school science lessons. It’s been 20 years and now it’s a little shabby looking. Still worth a visit. Warning: Lots of photos.

Hello,
I’m the science writer for Biosphere 2′s LEO project.
The scientific mandate of Biosphere 2 has changed over time, from the original Space Ventures project to the current science under the University of Arizona. While B2 could use a fresh coat of paint in a few places and the windows are dirty, the site has also become a new laboratory for big science projects, including LEO which is a massive NSF funded project to study water and ecology.
However, other experiments are also ongoing, many of them directly and indirectly linked to climate change, including a study to test stress on tropical forests.
There’s also the model city and green-roofs projects.
