• “Astonishing Animals” book by Flannery – Screaming

  This book has amazing pictures of the weirdest animals that i have never even heard of, and is just wonderfully well written! Check out the excerpt about the “Screaming Budgett’s Frog” ————-

  “In overall appearance it resembles the turd that a herbivorous mammal has left on the side
  of a muddy pool – good protection perhaps from frog-eating predators. The species gets its
  name from its threat display. If its turd-like disguise fails it, it rises up on its toes, inflates its body and screams loudly, mouth agape, like a woman in distress.
  Budgett’s frogs have some other unpleasant habits too. They bite whenever they can and
  are generally unclean creatures, which leaves them susceptible to infections and sores when held in captivity. They are also cannibals. “

• Ant Painting – Scientists Painting on Ants

  Believe or not, in order to distinguish ants (and other social insects) apart from one another, ant scientists have to actually paint each individual ant with a very tiny paintbrush (just one hair). This video shows the process in pretty detail! It was also created as a design study to prepare for making an automated robotic insect painter.

  I am launching the development of, Semi-Automatic Filmmaking, which will be a suite of open-source software tools for partially automating video production tasks(watch the video for more info). I developed one tool, DOCUMATIC, as part of my Master’s Thesis in Digital Media which is a free Android App to help small documentarians. Let’s refine and create more!

  I formed a Github to collaboratively develop, a kickstarter to set feature and bug bounties, and an instructable to help people use the system

  Those in the top 10% of the income scale received 63.7% of all the income growth generated over the 1979-2007 period. In contrast, the bottom 20% of all earners saw such a small share of income growth – just 0.4% – that it barely shows up on the included pie chart.

• Giant Robotic Duck head Vomits Candy to Children in the Park

  A design project, for GA tech’s Digital World and Image group, where we invert and loop the traditional one-way behavior of people coming to the park to feed ducks. We hook a computer-webcam duck tracking system to see when ducks are in a specific area of the pond, which feeds to an Arduino, which triggers a set of servos to dispense candy, and open the duck beak. When the people feed the ducks, it sets off the duck tracking sensors, and then the duck feeds people!

  For my biotracking research group at Georgia Tech (I did the 3D whales sharks a while back), I created a live-action/animated design documentary to explain not only the grammar of honeybee communication, but also the mechanics behind how it possible, and how humans, like karl von frisch, designed simple experiments to uncover the hidden language of bees. Fun, high-quality, 1080p resolution explaining lots of mysteries of honeybees and encouraging others to join us in plunging the depths that remain!

  For my research job we are using computer vision to track fish at the Georgia Aquarium. Since I shot in stereo video anyway, I decided to make a version available to people with red/blue 3d glasses. It turned out really pretty! Lots of fish, rays, and whale sharks.     It’s made for Red/Left Eye and Blue/Right Eye glasses. Apparently all glasses may not follow that same convention. In that case just flip them upside down if you can. I am not sure about the tilt. It works great for me. Don’t full screen it, it was calibrated to be viewed at about the standard size of a small youtube screen at 720P.

• New Batman Show Gets cancelled, Goes INSANE

  Ever since batman the brave and the bold got cancelled it has reached epic levels of total insane awesomeness. Aside from Animal-Vegetabl-Mineral Man (who has a T-rex for half of head) the episode “Emperor Joker” is a real work of art. Batmite craps all over the fourth wall, “The fans decided the fate of Jason Todd”, and batman is graphically murdered in several ways (including a rube-goldberg death device where batman’s escape from the device fits in as part of the device itself!) Watch the whole thing!

  Proof-of-concept prototype for Augmented Vending from GAtech’s Digital World and Image Group.
  This project converts the area around a vending machine into a performance area for local and internet audiences. A person can use the vending machine in the normal manner: insert money and choose the desired item. In our system, however, the user is also faced with an additional option. By selecting the “Try for a Free One!”option, the person freely enters into a fun audition with the chance of earning a free item

• Vicious Squirrels: Rotoscoped Horror Documentary

  Rotoscoped, semi-animated documentary concerning ferocious packs of (seemingly invulnerable) squirrels tearing through my ceiling and crawling into my home. Shot in a week but took 6 weeks to rotoscope (with aid from Adobe’s awesome new rotobrush).

  There is also a secret to this movie that I haven’t revealed. (Though the php link is a big hint)
