A US Senate report revealed recent findings that at least 70% of arms seized in Mexico are of US origin. The report identifies sales at gun shows (legally exempt from background checks) and the lapse in 2004 of the federal assault weapons ban as primary causes of the trafficking, among other factors.

Shortly after the resignation of P. J. Crowley in the wake of comments he made critical of the treatment of Pfc. Bradley Manning, President Obama has publicly defended said treatment in a press conference. Manning is confined to a 6×12 ft. windowless cell for 23 hours a day. He is not allowed to sleep during the day, and was recently forced to sleep naked at night, though he has now been given a garment to wear at night.
