On this day in 1954 a “…75-foot finback whale washed up in 1954 and was hauled to the alley behind Nathan’s and displayed at 50 cents a peek. ” And later on “The whale display went up in flames in August and the smell of formaldehyde and smoldering blubber drove Nathan’s customers away in droves. An insurance company paid to have the scorched whale towed away and dumped at sea but the stench remained for months after.”

This makes me nostalgic for unbiased journalism and a true sense of patriotism: it makes you proud of the monuments and achievements our country has. Today’s “patriotism” is a very different story.
The barest passing mention of two demonstrations in Philadelphia. The one that I was at, A Bicentennial Without Colonies, had more than 50K attendees. Still not enough to rate a description. So much for nostalgia about the days of unbiased journalism.

Artists in NYC buy out the inventory of a local grocery store as a statement against consumerism, but inadvertently almost put the poor place out of business due to their lack of understanding on economics (ie: A store with no inventory store doesn’t get magically restocked the next day).
