An excellent NY Times obituary for John Fairfax, who rowed across both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans – among such other extraordinary things as captaining a pirate ship and attempted suicide-by-jaguar.

I was fascinated by the cuttlefish at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and took a lot of photos. I captured this short sequence of it lunging at me. It’s a few frames short of brilliance but for a chance capture, could be worse.

Fake ads for the HAL 9000 computer, and Pan Am’s space flights. A bit of a Portal 2 vibe, especially in the HAL 9000 one.

I was a few years too young to actually get my hands on these games, much less understand what they were actually about, but I was well aware of their existence and the advertisements were certainly intriguing. Now that someone’s made animated GIFs showing the entire thing, I no longer have to wonder.

Full, good-quality video of the last show in Belle & Sebastian’s latest tour, from last night in Glasgow. NPR calls it a “holiday spectacular”, but while they open with a giggly cover of “Christmas Time Is Here”, I’m not sure I’d really say it was a holiday show since they mostly just play their own songs.
I saw them the last three times they were in Toronto (2003, 2006, and this past October), and this video really captures how great their live shows are with a killer performance and a great set list.
