  • Afterimage – DIY iPad lenticular display

AFTERIMAGE transforms your iPad into an autosterecopic time-shifting display. The app records 26 frames, which are interlaced and viewed through a lenticular sheet, allowing you to tilt the screen back and forth (or close one eye and then the other) to see a 3D animated image

  • Whitey’s Internet-leaked album finally released

    meta Permalink
    4:57 pm on 06/03/2012 | ARTS

UK musician Whitey appeared on the Grand Theft Auto IV soundtrack, and his music has featured in episodes of The Sopranos, House, One Tree Hill, The O.C, Kyle XY, Entourage and CSI.

Unfortunately, after his second album was leaked on the Internet, he lost his record deal. Subsequently he has failed to get a good contract offer, so he has gone fully independent and released his new album (and the leaked one) direct to fans via Bandcamp. Perhaps the Internet can help him this time?

Personally I recommend “Canned Laughter”, a genre-ignoring blend of songs that manages to stay catchy even when getting political.

Students in Québec are protesting a fundamental shift in post-secondary education philosophy. Tuition has been the lowest in the country anticipating the promise of European-style tuition-free university. Now they are being told that there has been a change of plans, that education isn’t about bettering the individual in the interest of a more creative and intelligent society, instead, that education is a business where only the highly profitable disciplines should be pursued: how else are you supposed to pay off the crippling student loans?

The Québec provincial government has put in effect Loi 78, where protest organizers may be fined up to $35 000, individuals – $5 000 and organizations – up to $125 000. The photos on the website linked-to are of people in defiance of this disregard for our charter rights.

What do makers and burners have in common beyond the cool gadgets? They are both part of an emerging culture that has at its core participation. This film delves into the amazing world of participatory culture and showcases some of the fantastic individuals at its core. I will be traveling around this summer documenting the amazing creations at Maker Faire, FIGMENT Project and Burning Man Regional events,” director Xina Ocasio on her upcoming work “Participate!”

Participate is a unique film that will give communities from around the globe an opportunity to reach a larger audience. Like many of the people she’s encountered on her adventures so far, Xina was frustrated with corporate culture, living a life that society said she was supposed to be happy with and wanted to help her peers understand how she spent her evenings and weekends – cooking up tesla coils, learning new skills and combining art, science and DIY spirit. She’s been to Burning Man many times and Maker Faire but wondered how many people outside of these inclusive yet close-knit communities know about all of the other amazing smaller events and groups sprouting up all over the country and world? Thus, the idea for Participate! was born — to help educate people that there is so much more available to them and often times, right in their own neighborhoods! Xina can’t travel to every nook and cranny, so she is offering people an opportunity to capture their latest community efforts on camera and submit them to her for inclusion in the final cut of the film. Xina is looking for your help to spread the word and contribute to the Kickstarter campaign at: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/participate/participate.

Webcomic Kris Straub on the Space Quest series and the Two Guys from Andromeda’s struggling Kickstarter campaign:

“Of the Space Quest series though, the pinnacle was Space Quest IV. Look at all the nourishment it contained for a growing Kris! A plot making heavy use of time travel! Over-the-top meta humor I had never encountered before that! Roger Wilco knows where he is by looking up at the status bar, for Chrissakes. And the smell and taste interface itself was a goof on Sierra’s new UI. The design of the time pod was reminiscent of the Workbee from Star Trek! How I pored over those technical manuals as a child! (You can see the same side vents in some of Starslip’s scuttlepods.)

“Via a mutual friend, I actually got in touch with the Two Guys from Andromeda, Mark and Scott, a few days ago. We talked about their Kickstarter [www.tgakick.com] (which I just did some art for) and just riffed for an hour.

“All I could think was that 13-year-old Kris would have wanted to live to see this day. It’s too bad he died at age 20, after a long battle with youth.

“I was very excited to learn that the Two Guys were back in the saddle and I hope it works out for them. I hadn’t really thought about what an impact those games had on me until I heard about the potential for another one.”

  • A “Lovecraftical” book getting Kickstarted, is anti-plush Cthulhu.

    Tim H Permalink
    4:50 pm on 06/03/2012 | ARTS

This book will feature artwork from Erol Otus, of D&D fame, and Tim Hutchings (who is me, the guy what’s submitting this) of PlaGMaDA.org. The ‘meta’ nature of the book involves Hutchings in a false history of Dunwich, in which it’s sunk in a reservoir and a subject for Hutchings’ artworks. It also has work from Dan Zettwoch, a comic guy and bad-ass printmaker.

    From the author:

“This is not a conventional parody, but a metafictional re-working of Lovecraftical material, especially Lovecraft’s intellectual concerns—such as the power of print and visual media, the unknown as a source of fear, and ignorance (willful and otherwise) as a defense against the new.

Plush-Cthulhu jokes are out. Shoggoth-literacy jokes are in.”

The film has just met it’s goal on Kickstarter but there’s still a few days left to get involved.

  • Sculpture uses tin-can phones and audio equipment to create an audio time capsule for Burning Man

    amberry Permalink
    4:50 pm on 06/03/2012 | ARTS

Singularity Transmissions is an interactive sculpture being created for the 2012 Burning Man festival. It is a 40 ft tall tower sculpture, surrounded by fifteen 10 ft tall pods, connected by tin can phones to create a unique visual and audio art piece. Both the people speaking into the cans in the pods and the people listening to all 15 channels of audio converging in real time inside of the main tower get a unique experience. It will be open to all to play with, though there are certain times blocked off for performances (several spoken word, the Burning Man opera groups, and several bands and DJs who will be able to plug into the tin can phone converted audio jacks). After the sculpture is burned at the end of the festival, all the audio will be available in an open source data base (15 channels, 24 hours a day, for 7 days! That’s a LOT of audio). Whether used as-is or remixed, the hope is to feed new projects beyond this one as well as to create a kind of time capsule for this years festival. Check out the kickstarter video for more information.

Preserve the sounds made famous by old technologies and electronics equipment. For instance, the textured rattle and hum of a VHS tape being sucked into the womb of a 1983 JVC HR-7100 VCR. As you probably know, it’s a wonderfully complex sound, subtle yet unfiltered.
